Emergency medicine, nursing faculty welcome additions

Medical Center leadership is proud to announce the following additions to its faculty and leadership staff.

James W. Galbraith Jr., M.D.

Dr. James W. Galbraith Jr., an associate professor of emergency medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, has joined the Medical Center faculty as an associate professor of emergency medicine.

Galbraith is nationally recognized for his research in emergency department-based systematic testing for HIV and hepatitis C virus (HCV) infections. Since 2011, he has obtained more than $3 million in research support for emergency department projects related to HIV/HCV testing and linkage to care. Additionally, he has received funding for harm reduction interventions for persons who inject drugs.

He is the author of 12 peer-reviewed publications and has numerous major lectures, abstracts and book chapters. In recognition of his HCV research and advocacy, he received the 2017 Hepatitis Hero Award from the Center for Disease Control Viral Hepatitis Action Coalition.

Galbraith is a fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians and an active member of several other professional organizations, including the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine. An Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society faculty inductee, he previously served on numerous councils and committees at UAB. He also previously served as medical director of the Birmingham Crisis Center’s Sexual Assault Nursing Exam program from 2015-18 and co-director of the Office of Research in the UAB Department of Emergency Medicine from 2017-18.

Kendra M. Redding, M.S.N.

Kendra Redding, a registered nurse in the intensive care unit who recently obtained licensure as a family nurse practitioner, has joined the Medical Center faculty as an instructor in nursing.

Redding earned her B.S.N. in 2015 and her M.S.N. in 2018 at UMMC. She has served as a staff R.N. in the intensive care unit at Merit Health Central in 2018, as a staff R.N. in the adult intensive care unit at Mississippi Baptist Health System since 2015 and as a travel R.N. in the medical intensive care unit at Druid City Hospital, Tuscaloosa, Alabama, from 2016-17.

A Sigma Theta Tau Honor Society inductee, Redding received the Jo-Ann McCullar Vandergriff Nursing Scholarship Endowment in 2017 and the Allie Mae Fletcher Memorial Award in 2016. She has been a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha since 2013.
